Founded in 1988, OPIRG Brock is the Niagara-based chapter of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group. Our work is focused on connecting people with the activism and services available in the Niagara region. We do this through our projects, opportunities, networks, and advocacy.

- OPIRG Brock is a registered non-profit and has access to charitable tax status through it’s affiliation with the OPIRG Provincial Network.
- OPIRG stands for the Ontario Public Interest Research Group, but for the sake of clarity and ease we just say OPIRG.
- OPIRG Brock was founded by students at Brock University from 1988
- We keep “Brock” in our name to both honour the fact we were founded by Brock students, and honestly changing the name of a legal non-profit organization takes a lot of time and money that we are currently using in other ways
- OPIRG Brock membership Is made up of both students members and non-student members (any faculty, staff, community members not currently attending post-secondary education).
- The OPIRG Brock team wses consensus-based decision making and facilitation models throughout their work and partnerships.

OPIRG Brock works with students, service providers, community members, labour unions, artists and activists to build collaboration, connections, and communities of abundance.
OPIRG Brock connects people to campus and community activism and services through our projects like the Niagara Free Store, the Anti-Racism Sponsorship Fund, the DisOrientation Guide to Niagara, and so many more!
Since being defunded in 2018 and 2024, our ability to do this work and pay our staff comes from support from the community in the form of memberships, donations, and volunteers! To help us keep this work going, please visit the Support Us page.
Our mandate is to create and support programming that responds to the needs of the Niagara Region, foster partnership between various sectors advocating for social justice, and increase opportunities and safer spaces for BIPGM and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. All of our work is guided by our Safer Space Policy.
We are a chapter member of the OPIRG Provincial Network. The Provincial network provides opportunities for Boards, staff, members, and volunteers to meet, learn, and collaborate. There are 10 Public Interest Research Groups at universities across the province that work together through the network, and many more across Turtle Island.
Meet our team
The volunteer Board of Directors is the governing body of OPIRG Brock. There is a maximum of 7 Board members at any given time, who are elected for two year terms (for a maximum of four years) at our Annual General Meeting. We currently have 2 staff members – 1 unionized, part-time Volunteer, Training & Planning Coordinator and 1 contract bookkeeper.
